What You Need to Know About Drones

By Gordian

Construction projects, especially those of larger-scale, require intensive work, resources, and most importantly, sufficient time. Although it is almost impossible to ignore these aspects of the construction process, there is a solution that could help play a large role in the future of construction. The use of drones in the construction industry has become increasingly popular in recent months due to all of the easily accessible benefits that they provide. According to Drone Enthusiast, the use of drones in construction are helpful with surveying, showing clients the progress, monitoring job sites, inspecting structures, better safety records, and keeping the project on-track and on-budget.

The value in the use of drones for construction projects, in addition to machinery and skilled labor, is significant in that they have capabilities that could not be achieved by machinery or labor alone. In the past, in order to use a drone a pilot’s license was necessary, now a remote pilot certificated is all that is required, making it easier for small businesses to access this new technology.

Given the risky nature and uncertainty of drone use, the FAA has implemented new regulations for commercial drones. A few of these regulations include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Fly only during daylight hours, or twilight if the drone has anti-collision lights
  • Stay below 400 feet
  • Weigh no more than 55 pounds
  • Limit the top speed to 100 miles per hour
  • Pilots must keep the drones within visual line of sight
  • Require operators get certified every two years
