Healthcare System Uses Job Order Contracting for High Volume of Work
Challenge
Harris Health System is a fully-integrated, public healthcare system that provides care to all residents of Harris County, Texas. It is the first accredited healthcare institution in the county to be designated by the National Committee for Quality Assurance as a Patient-Centered Medical Home that meets or exceeds stringent criteria for patient safety and quality. The system includes 18 community health centers, five same-day clinics, five school-based clinics, a dental center, a dialysis center, mobile health units, a rehabilitation and specialty hospital, and two full-service hospitals.
Harris Health is a teaching system for Baylor College of Medicine and The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, training the next generation of healthcare providers on the latest medical procedures and technological breakthroughs. All the training and care requires building, renovating and maintaining top-notch facilities. Harris Health had experience with a Job Order Contracting program that included a generic and broad Unit Price book that lacked precise line items for the type of work its hospitals needed to accomplish. Harris Health sought a more detailed and precise Job Order Contracting program that would expedite the construction process and manage repair and renovation costs.
Solution
In 2011, Harris Health System engaged with Gordian’s Job Order Contracting solutions. Unlike the program they were using, Gordian’s process includes the development of a customized Construction Task Catalog® with preset Unit Prices for construction Tasks, including items critical to hospital and healthcare procedures. This level of detail and customization delivered the precision that Harris Health System required.
